Zermatt is a tiny mountain village, 1620m above sea level, in the district of Visp in canton Wallis that was made famous after the famous Matterhorn was first scaled back towards the end of the 19th century. The entire town is a car-free zone in order to prevent air pollution. The only transportation allowed are mainly for hotels such as the one below.
Zermatt is now a famous ski destination and a holiday getaway for many to see the iconic Matterhorn that is the logo for the Toblerone chocolate. A few years later I was lucky to get to fly right by the Matterhorn and see this majestic mountain from a different viewpoint not many has.
We took the Gornergratbahn, the highest open-air railway in Europe, up to the summit of Gornergrat which is situated at an altitude of 1089m above sea level, making it the second highest railway in Europe after the Jungfrau.
It was such a great place from which we could view the Matterhorn and the many other mountains in the area including the tallest Swiss mountain, Dufourspitze also known as Monte Rosa, 4634m above sea level, which borders Italy.
Like any other trip up a Swiss mountain it wasn’t the cheapest but it was a great weekend getaway
