A day out in Kyoto – of temples, shrines and food

Our first day out in Kyoto couldn’t have been more perfect thanks to a green tea / matcha ice cream for breakfast.

My brother’s friend Jet who was doing his year abroad at Kyodai (Kyoto University) kindly took us around and became our guide for the day. First stop was the Nishiki Market where we saw all kinds of things being sold including seafood.

We waited for a bit for Jet’s favourite café to open for lunch and as soon as it did we sat down to have some delicious mouth-watering food.

After lunch we headed for Fushimi Inari, one of Kyoto’s most famous shrines with the red gates.

It was quite a lot of stairs that we had to climb to the top. In that heat and humidity, with a baby, it was quite challenging. We drank so much water.

We then took the train and walked for a long distance to get to our next stop, Kiyomizudera. We stopped for more matcha and black sesame ice cream on the walk uphill to the temple.

On the way down, I couldn’t help myself but to stop for a matcha cream puff.

We then walked down the two famous streets of Ninen-zaka and Sannen-zaka that was adorned with little shops.

We passed another Great Buddha and saw a few other temples and shrines before going into one of the nicest cafes around there. Unfortunately we did not stay as they did not have any gluten-free options for Peter.

Dinner was fantastic. We had sukiyaki and shabu-shabu. What a great way to end the day.

That green tea ice cream looks like it’s from outer space. But, then again, so does much of Japan! Cool post!
