I was lucky to have had the opportunity of a lifetime to fly over the Swiss Alps one work day on the 31st of August 2015 with some work colleagues.
We took off from the Zurich Airport and flew over Lake Zurich.
We then flew over Morgarten which was a battle ground and an important historical landmark for Switzerland.
We then saw Rigi at a distance. We flew over the Lake of Luzern and could see the city at the far end.
We flew over Titlis / Engelberg where I once was.
Then we saw the famous Mönch and Eiger.
We flew over Kleine Scheidegg where I was the autumn the year before on the way up to Jungfrau Joch the highest train station in Europe.
We then flew over the Sphinx on top of the Jungfrau and saw people walking on the glacier.
From there, we could slowly see the famous Matterhorn make an appearance, along with Weisshorn.
In the distance we also saw the tallest mountain in Europe, Mont Blanc.
We flew up close to the Matterhorn, the mountain used as the logo for the famous Toblerone chocolate, and circled back to see it from the other side. I was shocked to see 5 climbers at the top of the mountain.
We learnt that it was normal for little planes to wave back at mountaineers when waved to and were screaming when the plane suddenly tilted and the pilot moved its wing up and down as a sign of “waving” back.
Not long after we landed in Sion, the capital of Wallis, where we stopped for our lunch.
On the way back to Zurich, we flew over Lake Geneva and later over Murten. We flew over the capital city Bern which was beautiful to see from a bird’s eye view.
We were unbelievably lucky to have been able to fly on a day where the weather was so perfect and to see the Alps in all its majesty.
