Essaouira – A seafood lover’s paradise

There were several reasons why we decided to do the day trip to Essaouira from Marrakech:

  1. We were told we would see goats in trees on the way

  2. The hairdresser I went to the day before highly recommended it

  3. We wouldn’t mind some fresh and cheap seafood and a walk along the beach

  4.  6 full days in Marrakech was too much

  5. The goats in the tress along the way were everything I imagined and hoped for. I was so happy to finally see them and not need to go all the way down to Agadir contrary to my belief.

We also stopped at an Argan Oil Cooperative for the third time on this trip to Morocco. This time we didn’t go in to listen yet again to how argan oil is produced and the different products they sold.

We arrived in Essaouira and immediately headed for lunch. We had such a simple and amazing meal. They essentially cut and clean the seafood you want and grill it right on the charcoal fire.

We had small shrimps, 2 mantis shrimps, squid, sole, seabass and 4 sardines – cost us only 100 Dirham or 10USD! It was cooked on a grill with just salt and pepper. The salad on the side was a great complement to the meal.

We then walked around the old town. They sold the same things you find elsewhere in Morocco. The atmosphere however was very different as it was so much more laidback. It was also not covered like the souks in Marrakech which also made it feel more spacious.

We later went for a walk along the beach and then decided to go for yet another round of seafood. This time we had red snapper, sea bream, a big prawn, baby octopus and more.

What a lovely day out in Essaouira.
