When I found out that one could fly by helicopter from Antigua to Montserrat, I knew it was something we had to do. Montserrat’s volcano eruption in 1997 killed 19 people and as a result the island’s population decreased from 19’000 to 5’000 people.
We had a great flight crossing the beautiful Caribbean Sea from Antigua towards Montserrat. The views of Antigua we had from the helicopter ride were breath-taking.
We witnessed the volcanic activity as the pilot flew very close to the active volcano. The smell of sulphur wasn’t pleasant.
We flew over the entire island which was mostly made up of lush green mountains but also a huge portion was bare covered in black earth, rocks and sand. We saw the remains of what was once the capital – it is reduced to burnt remains of houses, schools and other public buildings.
