Shopping and eating in Bangkok in 36 hours

At the end of May this year, we found ourselves with 36 hours to kill in Bangkok. This time with 2 babies in tow.

Were we REALLY going to visit the Grand Palace as I thought we should?

First, we checked into the hotel and admired the view of the Chao Phraya River from our balcony at the Chatrium Riverside Hotel before jumping into the pool.

Now, everyone knows a trip to Thailand has to be about food. So off we went to the Chic Grill Seafood Restaurant at Asiatique The Riverfront.

We ordered a bit too much. But had the most delicious steamed seabass in a garlic and lime sauce I have ever tasted.

Of course we also ordered the mandatory pad thai goong, some deep fried squid, morning glory, stir-fried river prawns, watermelon and mango juice.

I managed to do some (work clothes) shopping while we were waiting for the food to arrive. We stopped by Mango Tango to get some sticky rice with mango to take away with us – unfortunately it wasn’t very good and was truly overpriced. The next night I stopped to get 4 packs of sticky rice with mango from a roadside stall on the way to Asiatique for 100Baht which was half the price for twice the portion. Unbelievable!

We were all jetlagged having just flown in the day before. We woke up at 2am and the kids ate so much of the leftovers from dinner like there was no tomorrow.

We went back to bed and woke up again at 12pm the next day. We quickly got ready and headed to Krua Apsorn for lunch as recommended by a friend. We had the most delicious tom yam there. Unfortunately there was no steamed fish on the menu so we ordered a whole deep fried fish which was quite good. Again the mandatory pad thai goong, a crab dish, a vegetable dish and som tam.

We then took a cab to Platinum Mall (pronounced Prati Nam in Thai) and very quickly had to have a cake break for our little guy who always chooses anything green – his current favourite colour. So he had Matcha Cake from Starbucks while we had our helping of sticky rice with mango.

Now shopping in Platinum Mall with two babies in tow means you need to do everything at the speed of lightning. We did extremely well. Left after about an hour plus with 12 new things between us.

That night we went back to Chic Grill in Asiatique for more steamed seabass and tomyam this time around.

If only Thai food in Europe tastes like what you get in Thailand…

Goodbye Bangkok. Off to Malaysia next!
