An Innsbruck (Austrian) Weekend

Innsbruck had been on my list of places to visit for the longest time and I am glad we finally made it there recently.

It was our first road trip as a family of 5 and we made sure to break the 4+ hour journey so the kids could stretch their legs and us parents could take a break from listening to The Wheels on the Bus for the thousandth time.

We made a stop in St Gallen to visit the UNESCO St Gallen Abbey’s library which was beautiful but alas no pictures were allowed inside.

Innsbruck was stunning. Just look at the views we had when the clouds finally cleared up in the afternoon from the lookout point next to the Kaiserjaegermuseum.

A walk around the old city earlier on took us to the famous Goldenes Dachl (the Golden Roof) where we saw some beautiful buildings.

Following a friend’s recommendation, we went to Cafe Munding and enjoyed some of the best cakes we have ever had – don’t miss out on this great place! The gluten free cakes were exceptional and I found them to be even better than the normal cakes.

We also paid a visit to the Hofburg which was a former Habsburg Palace and regarded as one of the three most significant cultural buildings in Austria alongside the Schönbrunn Palace and Hofburg Palace in Vienna. Luckily for us, it was Family Day and the 9 Euros entrance was free!

Later in the afternoon we did a little drive up to Igls which is a village just outside Innsbruck. We then spent some time at Schloss Ambras which had the most beautiful gardens.

The next day we stopped in Bregenz along Lake Constance on the way home. It was a beautiful sunny day, perfect for some ice cream.

We then took the Pfänderbahn up Mount Pfänder for unrivalled views of Lake Constance and the surrounding 240 peaks of the Alps.

There was a playground at the top as well as an Alpine mini zoo which was a challenge coming out of as it was incredibly steep to climb up.

Overall, a great weekend and a new country for all 3 kids!
