I’ve wanted to go up the Jungfrau for a long time but the steep prices was what always stopped us.
Finally in August 2014 we decided to do the trip. We drove to Lauterbrunnen, the land of waterfalls and took the train up to Kleine Scheidegg.
From there we went all the way up to Europe’s highest railway station which is located 3454m above sea level with two stops in between at the Eismeer and Eigerwand stations for views of the Aletsch glacier. I was lucky to have this view again the following year when I did a flight over the Alps.
It almost felt like we were in China whilst in the train heading up the mountain. We were sure that more than half of the people were mainland Chinese tourists. It was a nice touch for the train conductor to have given every passenger a little chocolate. There was also an Ice Palace at the top which had ice sculptures of Sherlock Holmes, characters from the Disney movie Ice Age and more. At the famous Sphinx, we could also go out and walk on the suspension bridge below.
It just so happened that that day we were there was also when the yearly Jungfrau Marathon was held. In conjunction with this famous yearly event, there were lots going on in Klein Scheidegg on our way down – music, people and more.
The views were incredible.
Unfortunately we couldn’t quite see the Eiger and Mönch as the clouds decided to stay.
On the train ride down, we heard one of the marathon runners sharing a story about how he once fell asleep while doing a 100km run and accidentally ran into an electrified cow fence and was awoken by the shock from it. How funny!
It was another beautiful day up another iconic Swiss mountain.
