I’ve been to Bosnia twice, just because I loved it so much the first time around. Here are some of the places we visited I can recommend:
Mostar
The Old Bridge (Stari Most) is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the icon of Mostar. The bridge was originally built by the Turks in 1566, destroyed in 1993 (war), and rebuilt in 2004. At 21m high, one can pay to see a member of the Mostar Diving Club dive off the bridge into the river below.
Sarajevo
Bosnia’s capital, Sarajevo is a beautiful city with many steeply inclined streets and houses seemingly perched on the hillsides.
Don’t forget to eat some burek, visit a mosque, feed the pigeons and have some lamb which you can find cooked on a stick over a fire across the country while you’re there!
Tara Canyon
We went rafting in the Tara River Gorge, a canyon which partly separates Bosnia and Montenegro. The canyon at its deepest is around 1,300 meters (4,300 feet) deep. These parameters make the Tara River Canyon among the deepest river canyon in Europe and the world.
Blagaj
Blagaj is a short drive away from Mostar (6km), situated at the spring of the Buna river and famous for its Sufi Dervish monastery. Built at the base of a 200m cliff wall and next to a cave around 1520 AD, the monastery has both elements of Ottoman architecture and Mediterranean style.
Kravice Waterfalls
40 kilometres south of Mostar, Kravice Waterfalls is a popular destination for visitors from Mostar and Dubrovnik. The waterfalls looked more impressive in pictures than it did in person for me. But it was a nice place to cool down for a bit on a hot summer day.
