I have never been happier to be a UBS client. The offer they currently have running where UBS clients can go up 35 different mountains in Switzerland for CHF 10 (return trip) is surely the most incredible marketing strategy one can come up with. I knew Schilthorn had to be one we had to go to before the offer ends at the end of October. The only issue is it is 2970m and we have two small babies – Noah being less than 3 months old.
So when the uncle came to visit, we decided to ask him to babysit while we went up with Ilyas who was then 20 months. It took 3 hours just to go up and down from Lauterbrunnen. We had an early start: caught a train from Basel to Interlaken, changed trains to get to Lauterbrunnen, a bus from there to where we would catch the one of 4 cable cars all the way up to the peak.
Ilyas cried on the way up. I stupidly enough forgot to bring something for him to munch on to alleviate the pain he must have experienced from the altitude. Once again it was an incredible feeling when the cable car seemed to burst through the clouds and it felt like a whole other world up there.
We got off at Birg and decided to take in the views there while enjoying some ice cream. Ilyas was happy once again. The views of the three majestic mountains of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau were unbelievable. I shall let the picture speak for itself.
The Skyline Walk was essentially a glass platform situated over a vertical precipice – not something for one afraid of heights.
If you are a thrill seeker, there is the new Thrill Walk which clings to the side of the mountain.
We then continued on all the way up to Schilthorn. There was James Bond music playing in every cable car thanks to the 1963 movie that was filmed at this very same mountain. I couldn’t stay for more than a minute in Schilthorn’s famous 360 degrees revolving restaurant. Unfortunately it gave me a headache.
I was growing anxious. I was still breastfeeding Noah and as the cable car down from Schilthorn was every 30 minutes, I realised it would be a whole 3 hours before I would see him again. Is my little baby going to starve to death because his mother needed to go up a mountain? Thankfully he slept the entire time I was away from him!
Lunch was back in Lauterbrunnen, the valley of the waterfalls.
