Nasu is a special place for me as that is where my Japanese family live. (I spent 7 weeks mostly alone in Japan in 2008 before starting my MSc in Japanese Studies and lived with my “host” family)
My siblings, niece and nephew joined us during our second week in Japan. Our first stop was lunch where we had fantastic unagi and ayu which is a local river fish.
The river itself was special as it had some kind of a wooden bridge built across it which trapped fish to come to the middle.
As it was a hot and humid summer day, none of us could stop ourselves from dipping our feet into the cold refreshing river water.
Next stop was to see the matsuri.
We went to have kaiten sushi (rotating belt restaurant) for dinner and I was happy to see the delight and disbelief in my siblings’ faces when they experienced the melt-in-your-mouth-sensation with their first taste of the heavenly fatty tuna – ootoro.
The next day we spent the night at a Hotel/Spa in Nasu that was known for their onsen (hot springs). The yukatas were provided for all hotel guests so we dressed up like the locals.
The hotel room itself was Japanese style in that everyone had their own futons to sleep on.
After dinner, we played lots of ping pong while trying our hands at some of the games at the arcade including beating the drums following the beat.
