Ilha Grande – Brazil’s island getaway

I was traveling non-stop for 6 months and made sure to run from time to time as a form of exercise. After settling in, I started running towards the beach and stopped on a big rock to do sit ups.IMG_2213

On the way back, I passed a town hall and heard a very interesting tune. I walked back towards it and saw kids doing the capoeira and went inside for about 10 minutes to watch them.

After dinner, we wanted to look for the acai berry ice cream that we’ve been hearing so much about but came across a dessert truck along the way instead which was divine. It had cakes, brownies, and a bunch of other things. We ended up choosing the thing the guy recommended which really was the best thing ever which looks like a chocolate ball with a strawberry in the middle and something else that was the essence of it but I haven’t got a clue what it is or how to describe it unfortunately, a toffee banana cake but the banana was as hard as a rock which didn’t make sense and a chocolate covered peanut square thing which wasn’t the best. We sat down on a bench facing the beach to eat that.

The next day we went on a booze cruise where we stopped at 3 different spots. The snorkeling wasn’t good at all but it was really nice just being in the water with everyone.

After dinner, we went back to the dessert truck to have something else so I asked the guy which one was his second favourite and he showed me this passion fruit something. I had a taste and was very impressed by how good it was. We sat on a bench facing the beach and I took my time eating it for the longest time which was really nice.

Our third day in Ilha Grande was spent hiking to the Lopes Mendes beach where the waves were much stronger than the ones at Trindade beach in Paraty. It took a lot of effort to try and get to deeper water because every single wave would just push you back towards the shore. It was a lot of fun though.

We then joined the rest and Emily asked if we were interested in going surfing. We struck a somewhat good deal I thought of having a lesson for an hour for 25 Reias each. It was really interesting. It took me forever to get the hang of it to actually know when to try and get up on the board but when it felt right, it really felt right. I never managed to stand. Emily and Matt were good. There were a couple of times when I rode along with the waves and that felt really exciting but every single time I tried somewhat to stand up I just fell off straight away and there was once when the board just smacked me right in my forehead and that was when I realized that it could well be dangerous.

We had to hike back to the next beach where we took the speedboat back unfortunately for 20 Reias which I thought was such a rip off.

Next stop: Rio de Janeiro
