Hiking around Lag da Pigniu / Panixersee

Our hike around Lag da Pigniu is probably one of the more beautiful hikes we have ever done. The two giant waterfalls at the two ends of the lake particularly made it special.

I had never heard of Lag da Pigniu and only stumbled upon it while looking for something to do nearby Brigels on Google Maps. I’m so glad I found this hike.

Swiss Mountain Lakes to Visit

Getting There:

Drive all the way up to the village of Pigniu. You can choose to park your car at the end of the village/start of the trail OR drive further on till you reach the bottom of the dam/lake where there is a parking lot.

As it was only a 4km loop hike around the lake, we decided to park at the end of Pigniu and walk up the 2km to the dam so we would get an 8km hike by the end of the day.

The Hike – My Impressions:

Walking up to the lake was an easy uphill walk. Just beware of the cars.

Arriving at the lake, in hindsight I would walk first on the east side as the views of the lake are better from this side.

But as I wanted a picture of the lake from the bridge we first crossed the bridge and hiked on the west side first.

It was equally beautiful of course.

This is mostly a very flat hike.

I loved seeing how well the boys were doing and how well they got on with each other.

You will start hearing the thundering of the waterfall as you approach the end of the lake. This was where we chose to have our picnic lunch.

I hiked up a little further up the waterfall and got this beautiful view of the lake.

Then we headed down to the black sandy beach where the boys had a lot of fun playing with the sand.

Moving on, we walked back up and crossed the bridge of the second waterfall. The sun was shifting and where it was previously incredibly hot and sunny was now in the shadows.

We had another quick stop at the beautiful picnic area and could admire the waterfall we were at for our lunch stop earlier.

Continuing on our hike, we said hello to the dog that was guarding the sheep on the hillside.

There were quite some bikers on this hike but most of them stay on the east side as the trail is flat there.

We said goodbye to Lag da Pigniu and headed onwards to Brigels where we had a great time at the natural pool by the Brigelsersee.

The next morning, we went down to the Rhine as I wanted the boys to see the area of the source of this amazing river.

Then we drove to Flims Waldhaus to start our next hike from Caumasee to Il Spir, Crestasee and Trin Mulin. The picture below of the Rhine Gorge and river was taken from the Il Spir observation deck.

It was a gorgeous hiking weekend in Graubünden.
