I slept on the two hour ferry ride to Zanzibar and was told later that night that they saw the tail of a humpback whale on the ferry ride. Great.
Upon arrival in Stone Town, we walked around the town and saw the many historical buildings, the park, had lunch (the biryani at this Indian restaurant unfortunately wasn’t great) and I then went to stock up on my supplies.
After getting a coconut to drink, I made my way to the Dajani Market. I found stalls selling mangoes among many other fruits. I got the guy to cut open a mango for me and made friends with the fruit sellers. Only one of them spoke English (sort of). It was a really interesting experience. Sitting on the sellers side of the stall and gobbling up the whole mango.
Juma who owned the spice stall behind the mango stall asked me if I had time, he wanted to take me to the beach. I said sure because he knew I was hesitant but he looked really sincere and stressed on the IF you have time. So I made time. It was a very nice short 5 minute walk to the beach and I got some really cool pictures including one of a local mosque.
He then took me back all the way to my hotel. Thank God. There was no way I’d have been able to find my way back. It was impossible. The streets in Stone town are a maze. He kept teaching me all these words in Swahili and I had no idea why. He even tested me and I failed miserably.
After showering, I set off for Africa House to see the sunset which was gorgeous. I like the traditional looking boats. I’m not sure what they call them but it made the picture of the sunset that much more exotic. Africa House was beautiful. I loved it. The chairs, sofas, the view of the sea and the sunset – priceless.
After an hour or so of the rest drinking, we headed for the fish market. It was a mini Jamal Efna in Marrakesh. The one in Marrakesh is a lot better. Cass, Clint and I split between the 3 of us. We had a huge calamari for 5000, octopus and squid skewer for 7000 and a crab for 4000 and only paid 14000. It was a good meal. I went ahead and got shark meat for 1500 and chicken satay for 1000 and paid 2000. The chicken was really good, a lot of flavor. The shark meat was chewy and very salty. I did not like it much. The sugarcane drink tasted really weird and the guy was dodgy. He took forever to return my change and gave 700 short. Horrible. I will never return to eat at this place. It is surely one of Zanzibar’s biggest tourist trap.
The next day I tried to swim with the dolphins.
